Doctoral Research Universities is the Carnegie Class for a very specific type of Research University. Generally, a research university is a university that awards at least 20 research doctorates each year. If the research university also spends a relatively small amount of money on research in comparison to the other two research university categories, Carnegie calls the university a Doctoral Research University.

Central Michigan University and Oakland University each spend less on research than High and Very High Research universities, and award at least 20 research doctorates making them Doctoral Research Universities.
